What Can We Do?

What Can We Do?

It would be reasonable to believe that our current government will not be able to significantly improve our fiscal position. It has set very loose fiscal rules and inevitably when they are not met they will blame factors outside of their control.

We have the option of 'doing nothing'. The indications are that if we do nothing our public sector finances will continue to deteriorate, our borrowing costs will rise, we could reach the point where the potential buyers of our debt lose confidence and don't want to buy it, that we have to print money (with the effect that inflation could rise and the value of our individual financial holdings falls, we have to renege on previous commitments (for example do you have a contract that states that having paid national insurance contributions you will receive a certain level of state pension at any particular time), we risk another financial crisis, we are unable to deal with major fiscal pressure such as the cost of a war.

If we do nothing we will continue the process of no doubt changing the Prime Minister, changing the government (as happened in Greece) but without materially changing our fiscal position because at the moment any party who truly declared their intentions to regain control of the finances would not get voted into power. There are many other potential issues.

We have a number of well established and respected organisations who offer information and guidance to the government and hold them to account and lobby regarding the individual tax and spend policies. However they stop short in terms of addressing how we, the wider population can or should encourage governments to act in terms of adopting measures that will rescue our national finances. Hence the reason for trying to plug that gap with this Campaign.

The aims and planned actions associated with Campaign are on the home page but as individuals we would ask that you support the Campaign in any way that you can and personally lobby your MP to be more responsible. Knowing that the Campaign is well supported would make our lobbying more effective.
